Recently, the city of Cape Town has undertaken a LED lighting LED Fruit Tree retrofit project at Cape Town Stadium to respond complaints about the wastefulness involved in fully illuminating the stadium.
At a demonstration, the stadium’s lights were switched off with only the new LED lighting, plane warning lights and the fire escape routes being lit.
Mayoral committee member for tourism Grant Pascoe said “This has LED Fruit Tree given us a chance to look at other strategic assets such as the City Hall and the Good Hope Centre to retrofit with these lights as well and save money which can go other projects.”
The stadium will cost R44.6m to run in this financial year, according to a LED Fruit Tree council report. The operating budget is R56.7m, with estimated income of R12.1m. With this project, it will snip R1 million off its electricity bill.
